Awesome local place to stop at for ANY eater. I had a Mediterranean wrap that could have been a salad and my 5yo had mini sliders. Both came out quickly and very delicious. The ambiance is very cool and modern with simple lines, snazzy furniture and fun colors. I wasn't quite sure where to stand and order but that naturally sorted itself out as did the helpful staff who kept a busy, business lunch crowd moving. Outdoor seating was a plus with parking being the only thing even remotely tricky!! Great food and wonderful place. If I lived in Des Moines I'd eat there often!!

I was in the mood for a juicy burger today, so I decided to stop by Big City Burgers and Greens. I got there at noon and the place was pretty busy and most of the tables were occupied, but it didn't take very long to place my order. Plus the staff was trying to be proactive and taking drink orders, so that was nice of them. I ordered the Big City with cheese burger basket with pepper jack cheese and a side of their normal french fries. The meal also came with a drink. The total came out to be around $9.50, which is a bit high for a single patty burger. To make it a double would have cost about $2 more (I regret not doing this). The burger tasted fresh, but it just wasn't memorable. It was like I finished eating and didn't even realize that I was done eating. I didn't put any ketchup on it at first, since I wanted to taste the flavor of the meat, but in the end I had to put ketchup and mustard on it to make it a little more flavorful and juicy. The french fries were thin string sized fries, and most of my fries were stale and hard to bite in half, so I was quite disappointed. They were at least seasoned well with salt. The establishment looked very modern and gave off a "cool" vibe, but overall I was disappointed with my meal. For almost $10, I expected a thicker burger with more flavors and fries that had a little more crunch.

Well the first time I was ever in Big City Burgers was a New Years Eve Party! My Friend Tone Zone was Dj'ing after midnight and I was having a great time dancing to the Jackson 5's, "I Want You Back." Yes I even danced on top of a table! When deciding to eat here for the first time yesterday I avoided that table and sat at the long seated bar, just to hold myself back from hopping up and dancing again! Now to my lunch! There was super long line at noon, but the line moves really fast, with two registers open, and a staff member coming out and asking what you want to drink, so I was sipping water while waiting in line! It makes the waiting a much more enjoyable experience. I decided to order the Metro Burger The Metro Veggie Burger is cheap only - $5.25 It's got 3 types of rice, grain, roasted corn, black beans, sautéed mushrooms, onions, peppers, garlic, hummus and marinated tofu served a choice of bun, lettuce wrap, or pita! I choose BUN! It was fantastic, although if you were driving this would not be the burger to choose as it falls apart really easily! I was lucky I was eating alone cause I was making a huge mess! I ended up having to eat it with a fork! I also got a side of regular fries, which were super salty and wonderful! I can't believe this is the fist time I have ever gone here to eat, because I should have known I would be singing, the Jackson 5's, "I Want You Back," to my meal after I finished it.. SO GOOD! youtube.com/watch?v=s3Q8…

Went here for lunch. Ordered a burger and fries, and then got a hotdog because I was still hungry after spending $12+ dollars. For that price I expected gourmet burgers. What I got was a patty from McDonald's that relies on hipsters to pay a premium for mediocre food. String fries were OK, and the expensive hotdog was something I would expect from a $2 8 pack from Walmart. It was not a nice big all beef dog I was expecting. I would never return again. If it was down to McDonald's or this place, I go with MD.

The burgers tasted fresh, which is always good. We also had the Big City fries and onion strings, which were both great. The only reason for four stars instead of five was it took a while to get our food, but it was during a lunch rush, so that's likely why. Overall, it's a great stop for a quick lunch.

Decent burgers. If you are tired of the big chains and want something different at about the same price as Burger King, go here. The place is clean and has a very nice atmosphere (it was 1pm when I got there). Burger was fresh. Fries (regular) were OK. Staff were friendly. For the price, u can't go wrong.

I was impressed with the tenderloin and the regular fries were excellent. The food arrived quickly and service was friendly at the counter. Convenient if you are already downtown. I got there a little beforw the lunch rush, so didnt have to wait to order or for a table. I'll definitely go back, especially for the fries. The salads looked really good too.

I came here for lunch and ordered a veggie burger on greens. The presentation was really bad, it looked awful, and the taste wasn't much better. My dad and I both ordered salads and the ingredients didn't seem fresh. It was like old iceberg lettuce and not much else. The veggie burger was topped with tons of tofu and marinated vegetables. I rarely give out one star but this was a really disappointing lunch! With its location this place should be packed! With better food I think it could be.

This place was just awesome! It seemed so clean and green and everything. I got the Metro Veggie Burger on a Whole Wheat Pita w/ Avocado (extra $0.75). The Pita was nice and thin. It was real good. I was kind of disappointed that I couldn't open it and stuff it though, but it was GOOD. The Veggie burger was pretty awesome. It was a mix of grains (a little spicy due to the peppers) topped with mushrooms, tofu, and tomatoes. It came with a side of humus like sauce and a spicy kind as well. I would highly recommend it! Those sauces were really good. I asked the manager what they were made of and there were things like agave nectar and pickles and etc. It was all good, clean ingredients! I was very impressed. THE BIG CITY FRIES. soooo good! Wow. I knew I was expecting something better than fries, but I wasn't expecting something THAT good. The chocolate milkshake was good too!

Went here while I was waiting for a tow truck for my car. The lunch rush moves quickly--these guys have perfected their system--and I had my portobello mushroom burger pretty quick. Normally, I like big hunks of meat, but I've been eating pretty crappy so I got the Garden Burger with no side. The only thing I didn't like was the flimsy iceberg lettuce. I asked for the hummus on the side, and that was no problem. I really loved all of the flavors and the remoulade sauce was killer. Char on the bun was also great. I also like their table delivery system, and that they have boxes and bags ready to go in case you need to leave in a hurry like I did. I would definitely come here again if I was in town.

I was looking for something quick, cheap, and delicious without being greasy and that is exactly what I found here. I had the Big City Hotdog and it was cooked fresh versus sitting in hotdog water all day. It tasted quite delicious and paired well with the thin and crispy fries (which also happened to be remarkably fresh!) The service was good and the cashier was very friendly and didn't seem to mind at all that I came in 10 minutes before close. Overall I was very satisfied. This was my first time, and I will definitely be back!

First time having lunch in the city, my wife and I stumbled upon Big City Burgers and Greens. We liked that the food was locally sourced and the restaurant was environmentally responsible. The Big City Burger was absolutely delicious! The Chicken Bites (Kids Meal) was just a little salty but still tasted really good. Really great service - They noticed we needed a high chair for our child and brought one out to us before we had to go looking (or even ask!) Will definitely be back to try more of their menu. Recommended!

In the middle of a roadtrip, the wife got a craving for a burger so I was pumped to find a place in Iowa using good hormone free meat. Couldn't believe how cheap a burger is here, however VERY disappointed that the place makes no mention of a where its cheese is sourced from and uses high fructose corn syrup in its ketchup. Anyone that cares where the meat comes from should also care about proper sourcing of the other ingredients. The burger was mediocre, but for 5 bucks I wasn't expecting much....5 stars for telling me about the sourcing of the beef, 1 star for the ambiance/location/cheese/ketchup

The Quick review - 1) Definitely worth going to when your downtown but don't go out of your way to make it there 2) At least they are using fresh meet and not frozen patties 3) The Big City fries are worth the upgrade 4) New restaurant that needs to work out the kinks 5) The burger it self is not the best burger i have ever had, but at least it is not insanely greasy. It has just the right amount of grease. 6) it is your basic burger selection. They are not trying to be fancy and creative straight forward american burgers. 6) It would be nice if they were open on Saturday's for lunch or friday night dinner for those who can't make it there on weekdays The long winded, i don't blame you if you don't read it but you might miss out on the possible profound moment that you have been looking for your whole life full of run on sentences, review. I was looking forward to eating here, because I am still hunting for the best burger in DeMo! Unfortunately it is not close to being there yet. Customer service: I arrived at 2:00pm on a wednesday they state their hours are till 2:30pm. They were all but closed. All of the salad items where pulled, they had already cashed and counted the drawers. They insisted that they could help me. I hate doing that to people, as i used to work in the restaurant biz. I did go ahead and place an order. Note to management next time you want to close up early just put a sign on the door and lock up. They were nice and willing to help 4 star on service. The Food: I got a basic bacon cheese burger with the Big City fries. The burger you can tell are fresh non frozen hand patties which is really nice. I tasted just the meat and it lacked any kind of seasoning, bland. They forgot the cheese. I don't know how you do this when there are only three components to the burger. The saving grace was the Big City fries. I like the thin crispy style fries, and these were tossed with asiago cheese, white truffle oil and Italian parsley. These are definitely worth the price upgrade! They big city fries save this from a 1 star. Also I was recently told they are working with local producers for some of their ingredients. I am updating this because after my (being rushed out the door) dinning experience I received horrible customer service through social media. I sent a couple of tweets back in forth, and there was never "hey sorry about that, please try us again." I did notice that they responded pleasantly and quickly to anyone that praised them. Need better social media skills.

A co-worker introduced me to this place through their delicious (and CHEAP) soup. Soup of the day choices are varied, and all I've tried so far are delicious. They serve them with these little garlic knot rolls, and those puppies are tasty. Since that first visit, I've been back several times to try out some of their other intriguing menu items. I loved the Big City Burger with cheese (you can pick your cheese from a pretty good list of options), I ordered it with the Big City fries (omgheaven). The burger tasted goooood, and I'm mostly non-carnivorous. I've also really enjoyed the NYC salad - big and filling, and again served with those tast little garlic knots. I love that there are so many organic options, fresh, local/grass-fed meats, the plates/cups/etc. are all compostable. One note, the place is busy right at peak lunch hours, but show up after 1pm and it's really a nice, peaceful dining experience. It's fun to sit and watch people walking by out of the big windows, and when that gets boring, you can tap into their free wi-fi and watch stupid cat videos on YouTube. Good times.

This place is pretty good for a quick lunch during the week and provides a nice alternative the places found on Court Ave or in the food court. The burgers are pretty good, and I like that they have tons of toppings options so that you can customize your burger however you may want. They appear to have a nice selection of items to build your own salad that I am anxious to try. I will say I wasn't all that impressed with the Big City Fries. I guess I feel that no matter how hard you try, you can't make french fries "fancy." The truffle oil just added more grease, although the asiago cheese was pretty good. Next time I'll pick a different side.

I've been waiting to go to Big City Burgers for quite some time. I'm rarely downtown for lunch but was able to meet 3 friends about a week ago. I was super excited. The 3 friends had already been a couple of times before and were saying very complementary things. So since I turned 32 I've been craving cheeseburgers so I was excited to say the least lol! What I ordered: Burger with their sauce and asiago cheese, truffle oil fries too. Liked the selections of the cheese. Burger was pretty good, no complaints. Satisfied my craving. My friends ordered the burger as well and liked theirs too ok. One friend ordered a chicken salad that looked amazing and she said it was just as it looked. That's what I'll be getting next time, if I go again. The disappointing part were the fries. I had heard great things about these fries but they were anticlimactic haha. The 3 of us that had the truffle oil/ parm fries got a big pile of dried out, cold, stale fries. We were all asking ourselves if they served us fries from the day before, yeah that bad. Anyhoo, I tweeted them our experience and received a tweet back saying, "thanks we'll pass on the info". Ok, thanks then I guess. It was nice of them to respond at least. Who knows if I'll be coming back since I don't make it downtown for lunch often. I may try it again, but probably that salad that looked really good. Overall a little pricy for that experience in my opinion. I guess I'd rather go to Red Robin, which is a chain, and that is sad my yelping friends.

New to the Des Moines area I stopped at pretty much the first place I came across in the downtown area. I was happily surprised! The atmosphere of the place is so fun and modern. The outdoor seating was such a nice touch for the area! I loved seeing the clean ingredients they had on their menu. I ordered a burger and it was great! The salad selection looked wonderful ad I am anxious to give those a try another time! Everything was very reasonably priced and looked great!

After hearing the Big City story during their grand opening hype of late 2010 - local ingredients, local ownership - I've been eager to try the place. Like most, I always love a good burger. Finally found an excuse to go last week with a group of co-workers and it turned out to be one of the better "business" lunches I've been to. The menu doesn't vary far from the name. Pretty traditional greasy spoon fare (though they do offer tuna, turkey and veggie burgers) with little gourmet touches, as well as a wide range of salads - if you're into that kinda thing. My bacon cheeseburger was cooked to perfection, full of flavor and not overly greasy. The nice surprise were the Big City fries, a tangle of potato, parsley and asiago - thin, crispy, rich and greasy (in a good way - c'mon, they're fries!). The service was spectacular. Casual & loose about everything, but still professional and super-friendly. They even switched one of my lunchmate's salads without complaint when she accidentally ordered the salmon vs. the shrimp. Good location and decent prices for a lunch spot. Fantastic service in a fun environment. Ingredients that taste as fresh as they're advertised. A restaurant I can root for.

Amazing burgers and fries! Very fast, but far far beyond fast food quality! (My wife says the wrap is yummy too!)
